Hike to Lakes of the Clouds, AMC Backcountry Hut

You will not want to miss this overnight with PeaksandPoses. We’ll be spending Saturday night above the tree line at Lake of the Clouds hut. This is the Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) highest and most visited hut. Our hike up the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail will land us just 1.5 miles from Mount Washington with an extraordinary view of the eastern slope of the tallest mountain in New Hampshire!!! We are also .4 miles below Mount Monroe another spectacular mountain along the Presidential range.

While our hike is short (3.1 miles to the hut), there are sections that are steep. This trail is rated difficult due to the rocks, tree roots,  steepness, and possible wetness. The trail starts off flat out of the parking lot for a mile or so and then gains elevation and crosses over some small water crossings.

What will our day be like?

We'll meet at the trailhead and stop along the way to take in the views and of course snap photos.  We'll arrive at Lakes of the Clouds hut to unpack (possibly have lunch) and if weather permits, we'll continue a short distance (.4 miles) to summit Mount Monroe at 5,371' elevation.

Back at the hut, there is a common area to chill, read, stretch, do yoga, or venture outside to walk around the area. Lake of the Clouds Hut offers co-ed bunk rooms and washrooms with compostable toilets. There is running cold water and no shower. Bunkhouses are not heated and have no lighting. (You are given a pillow and three woolen blankets and you can bring your own sleeping bag. A packing list will be sent to you). Electrical outlets are not available. You must have a headlamp with extra batteries. Our stay above the tree line will be an extraordinary experience.

Meals

Dinner and breakfast are served family-style at the hut. The Croo bakes bread and dessert daily. They can accommodate special dietary needs too.

Your health

You should be able to sustain cardio activity for several hours (there will be resting stops).

You must have good hiking boots or trail runners.

You have to carry all your belongings in a backpack with water and trail snacks.

Cancellation and refund policy

If you cancel 60 days prior to the trip, your payment will be refunded minus a 25% administrative fee.

If you cancel 30-59 days prior to the trip, 50% of your payment will be refunded minus a 25% administrative fee.  If your spot can be filled, your money will be returned minus the 25% administrative fee.

If you cancel your trip within 29 days of the trip, there will be no refund. If your spot can be filled, your money will be returned minus the 25% administrative fee.
